As promised, I put together the pattern for the crocheted toy bags that I've been making lately. This is the first pattern I've written, so bear with me and please let me know if you find any errors or if any of the directions are confusing.
Crocheted Toy Cocoon Bags
Materials: Any bulky weight yarn. Or you can crochet multiple strands of a smaller weight yarn. For mine I used Lily Sugar 'n Cream Worsted/Medium Weight Cotton (in Soft Ecru) but crochet three strands at once to get the bulk I wanted.
Hook: For a larger bag with a stretchier and looser stitch, I used a P hook. These bags hold a surprising amount of toys. If you want a smaller, stiffer, more structured bag, I suggest using a smaller hook. I used an N hook for a smaller bag and found it good for really small toys.
Stitch marker: I used ones like these. But you could also just use a safety pin (I've even been known to use a bobby pin, in a pinch!)
Pattern:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
st/s = stitch/es
sc2to = single crochet decrease (single crochet two together)
This pattern is crocheted in the round - the SPIRAL way. If you're unfamiliar with this method, you can see explanations here and here. I prefer the spiral method because it looks cleaner to me and is less confusing than traditional crochet-in-the-round. Just be sure to always use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch in each round.
Round 1: Ch 2, work 6 sc into 2nd ch from hook - 6 sts
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around - 12 sts
Round 3: (sc in next 1 st, 2 sc in next st) 6X - Total 18 sts
Round 4: (sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st) 6X - Total 24 sts
Round 5: (sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st) 6X - Total 30 sts
Round 6: (sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st) 6X - Total 36 sts
Round 7: (sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st) 6X - Total 42 sts
Round 8: (sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st) 6X - Total 48 sts
Round 9-19: sc in every st around - Total 48 sts

Thanks! I wound up making one so far with a P hook, and it took me two skeins of LB's homespun to get to row 24, then I changed to a different color and used maybe 1/4 of it to finish it up. It holds a bunch of Lego Duplex pieces, and I am going to be making many, many more!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds awesome! I may have to try a multicolored one as well. I would love to see a photo if you have one :) If you want, you can email a photo to yeshavesome@yahoo.com.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to try this... they look marvelous! Thank you for the pattern. It seems very well put together..

Thank you for the pattern. I plan on starting my first one tonight. If they go quickly, I'd like to make at least two for a baby shower I'm attending next week. Be fun to place a couple toys inside. : )
ReplyDeleteThanks again!!

Thank you for this pattern. I have made three of these bags to help organize my mudroom. You can see it here if you like. http://crochetforums.com/fo-and-wip-show-off/mudroom-storage-hanging-baskets/
ReplyDeleteLove this! I was just thinking today how I needed to make some for all the stray winter hats and wayward mittens. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! They have really come in handy and cleared up some clutter. It's a great pattern. Sorry I didn't see your reply until now.
DeleteI'm just starting with crocheting and loved using this pattern as a base. Thanks so much for sharing. I ended up making my bag a bit bigger to hold all my crocheting supplies and added two handle. :-) http://instagram.com/p/hBIofjs6AP/
ReplyDeleteThe double handles! So great. I may have to try that out too. Thanks for sharing!

I was thinking abut making this and maybe putting a grocery bag inside and put potatoes and maybe onions in it?
ReplyDeleteHave you ever crocheted with plastic bags as your yarn? Personally, I've never done it, but I've seen it done. Might make for an interesting experiment to try! That way, you wouldn't have to line it and you could get the air circulating in there still. If you try it out, I'd love to hear how it goes!

I just finished my first bag and I love it! Thanks for the awesome pattern :) I am going to make a few more, but I want to go a bit larger, how would I go about that? I'm new to crocheting and have never deviated from a pattern before
ReplyDeleteTo go larger you need to increase the number of increase rounds. I wanted mine larger as well, so I just doubled each round. It has worked out nicely.
DeleteHello, could you tell me how much yarn this uses? In the UK we work in grams and the Lily Sugar n Cream comes in 70g balls. Thanks
ReplyDeleteGreat pattern. Used Aran100% cotton wool (worsted weight). Two strands in blue and green for my son. I extended the rounds 9 to 19 by 11 rounds to make it longer. Will make more for my daughter's room.
ReplyDeleteI use a 5mm hook, size H. It used less than 1 ball of Lily Sugar N Cream (56.7g or 2oz). I did a pretty loose stitch. Love it! Thanks for the awesome pattern!
ReplyDeleteHi there,
ReplyDeleteI really like this bag and would like to use it in a 1/2 bath to hide sunscreen, first aid stuff, etc.
How big are they in height and diameter?
Thanks so much.
Love this pattern. I too have been using different hooks and crazy colors. I'm making a bunch more to have on hand for special happening s

ReplyDeleteMerci beaucoup
ReplyDeleteI love this basket! I used Lion's Brand Hometown yarn and P hook. It turned out perfrvt. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI just moved into a newly renovated wheelchair accessible apartment and there is no shelf for my shampoo, conditioner and shower gel in the shower area. This will be perfect for those and I can put it on a hook.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the fun pattern. I made this with Serenity Chunky. I don't crochet often, and seem to stray from instructions, so mine was some variation on a single crochet, although I don't know what it was. I had an extra loop in there (taller stitch). Anyway, one skein of the Serenity Chunky with a 4 mm hook and I ran out with a mere two rows to go. It would have made it to the end had I done the single crochet properly. But anyway, I tied it off early, and the basket is super cute. I wish I could post a photo of it. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing the pattern...I'm going to try doing one of these today.I live to crochet n learn new patterns. But I have one questions would you be able to put baby bath toys in it after there bath or should I use a cotton yarn? My first thought was to put a plastic bag inside thanks again
ReplyDeleteI am a beginner but think I can do this. I'm sure going to try. I want to make Santa type bags for the kids instead of stockings...
ReplyDeleteIm new to crocheting and am in dire need to declutter my house. I plan to make probably several of these to hang around the house for all those annoying things that are left out, keys, gloves - whatever doesnt have a proper home! Thanks for the pattern!!
